
Val Chong
Val Chong is a Soprano from Singapore. In 2025, she was awarded first prize at the Voice Concerto Competition at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music where she performed Knoxville: Summer of 1915 (Barber).
Val’s performances include the soprano solo in Bach’s Easter Oratorio and Mozart’s Coronation Mass. Her operatic roles span Lucy in The Telephone (YST Opera Production) Monica in The Medium (Chicago Summer Opera), Serpina in La Serva Padrona (Conservatory Opera Scenes), Zerlina in Don Giovanni (Vienna Opera Academy), and Despina in Così fan tutte (Classic Lyric Arts). She has also sung as chorus of staged opera productions including Médée (The Opera People), La Sonnambula (The Opera People), La Cenerentola (The Opera Lab), and The Three Feathers (L’arietta Productions).
She will be pursuing her Master of Music (MMus) in Voice and Opera at the New England Conservatory this fall with Professor Carole Haber. Her previous education include Bachelor of Music (Honours) at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of Professor Alan Bennett, semester exchange at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with Julian Tovey and IBCP at School of the Arts, Singapore with Leslie Tay. She is currently studying privately with renowned American soprano, Janet Williams.
Aside from her extensive performance career, Val has over half a decade of teaching experience in a wide range of music genres, including Pop and Jazz, JPop and Mandapop. Emerging as Champion at the B Dazzled! Music and Talent Competition (MADDSpace) in 2019, her passion for music genres beyond classical singing has grown exponentially over the years. This has translated into her love for vocal pedagogy across all genres, cementing her as a versatile performer. Her students have been successful recipients of DSA secondary school programmes, and have taken the LCME, ABRSM and Trinity College voice examinations across genres including Classical, Musical Theatre and Pop and Jazz.
She believes that anyone can learn to sing with the right guidance and healthy technique. As a teacher, she is passionate about nurturing a free, resonant, and authentic voice while helping singers build strong vocal foundations, confidence, and individuality.
